BLAST FROM THE PAST: REVISITING LIMBC

Get you bike swag ready cause the Tradewinds Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (Tradewinds LIMBC) is back for its sixth edition and this time, its gonna be hotter than ever. Set to take place from the 20th to 24th of October 2015, the race will start with a 40km Fun Ride opened to people of all age and all bikes, followed by the UCI MTB Marathon Series, and finally the Tradewinds LIMBC. Not quite feeling it yet? Here’s a stroll down memory lane for you to recap the best moments of LIMBC.

2010: The Humble Beginning

LIMBC started off as a humble two-staged race. It wasn’t a full-fledged professional race but more of a platform for avid mountain bikers and sports junkie to put their endurance, speed, and skills to the test in a real racing environment. Over 800 local and international riders participated in the race and it was Australia’s Lachlan Norris and Malaysian ace Masziyaton Mohd Radzi who rode away with the title.

2011: A Star-studded Langkawi

Dubbed as the “Tropical Forrest Challenge”, LIMBC 2011 has grown from a two-day event to a five-day event. It was indeed a memorable edition as the rivalry between star riders Karl Platt and the late Burry Stander escalates as the race unfolds. Fans were treated an additional bonus with Tour de France winner Chris Froome who swapped his road bike to get down and dirty for some off-road action.

2012: Keep ‘em Wheels Rolling

All eyes were on Karl Platt as fans wonder will he be able to defend for their title. However, it was Fabian Giger who unleashed his eye of the Giger and took the title away from Platt. On top of that, what makes the 2012 edition extra special is, it was selected as one of only 10 mountain bike stage race worldwide to be included in the UCI’s international calendar. And did we also mentioned that it LIMBC 2012 was the highest ranked MTB event in Asia?

2013: Asian Game Strong

The Asian cycling scene was injected with a dash of confidence thanks to Japan’s Kohei Yamamoto who became the first Asian rider to claim overall victory in the men’s category. Lea Davison on the other hand, proved that she’s the MTB queen of Langkawi as she emerged as the only rider (male and female) who manage to defend for their title. Now that’s what we call girl power.

2014: Setting the Bar High

The 2014 edition, also the fifth edition was no doubt a celebration of mountain biking. Aside from a lucrative increase in prize money to USD 150,000.00, a new category - Men’s Open, was introduced to encourage weekend warriors and novice riders to have a taste of Langkawi. In the end, it was first timer Michal Lami and Eva Lechner, who competed in three editions of the LIMBC, who were announced as champions of their respective category.
