TOUR DE FRANCE 2013 WINNER FROOME GRACED LANGKAWI TWO YEARS AGO

Tour de France winner Chris Froome swapped his road bike for some off-road action in  the 2011 Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge, taking part in the jamboree as well as Stage 4 cross country with a summit finish at Gunung Raya.

The Kenyan-born rider arrived in Langkawi as the Vuelta a Espana runners-up and said: “I actually started cycling through mountain biking, so it was nice to switch away from the road bike for a bit and go back to my roots. Langkawi is a paradise for training and I enjoyed the outdoor activities, exploring a few places and taking in the scenery on my bike.”

Froome’s attendance alongside Adam Blythe came as a boost to the LIMBC brand  which has grown into a must-race event for elite MTB riders.

Race organiser and Human Voyage CEO, Datuk Malik Mydin, said Froome’s rare appearance in the jamboree and Stage 4 to Gunung Raya was a moment to cherish for LIMBC.

“The island of Langkawi was the perfect place for Chris to ride, relax and enjoy himself. His presence in the jamboree event allowed riders from all social strata to ride beside him. That opportunity does not come often. Chris too took the opportunity to ride long-distance during his stay here,” said Malik.

Froome secured the world’s greatest cycling prize – the Tour de France yellow jersey – in fine fashion in Paris last Sunday in what was the race’s 100th edition.
